Being one of the Northernmost District of Kerala, Kannur has an extended wing of Western Ghats that makes the place a scenic beauty. The district also has eye catching beaches. There also many historical monuments over there which are gems to it’s crown.
The district is also known as “the land of looms and lores”. There are huge number of looms over there and the folklore of the city are also unique. The Khadi is worn and widely promoted there. The lores indicate all those unique rituals and dances practiced over the place and the stories which knits them.
The Theyyam is a dance form just unique to the place and it commences from December till April. The dance of the performers and the rhythmic drumbeats just puts you into a trance.
Kannur also has the largest mangrove forest in Kerala and there is also a mangrove themed park over there. It has got beautiful virgin Beaches, pristine unspoiled Backwaters, Hill stations, Wild life sanctuaries, Cultural centers and Authentic Ayurvedic centers. I stayed at a home stay in Kannur near Thottada backwater during my trip. Hospitality of the people in Kannur is beyond words.
These are not the only things that makes Kannur special but the dialect of the region, the Malayalam spoken there is completely different from rest of Kerala. I guess this is because of large heterogeneous population of the District. The district has a blend of people from all three major religions of India. i.e Hindus, Muslims and Christians.
The diverse population also made a diverse cuisine which includes authentic Malabarian with some twist of Arabian flavors. The beef is also not banned over there because it is widely enjoyed by all. And you could probably get a steaming plate of Beef curry and Malabar Parotta from every street food stall.
There are many beautiful and incredible destinations in Kannur that are worth visiting. I will be writing about it in details in my next post...
